For us, certifications have always been a tricky thing. 1% is pretty much the only movement that we wholeheartedly support. It's transparent, doesn't marginalise, cost producers or require long approval times. Plus, it prioritises the planet and tackling climate change - need we say more?
Our membership is a sign of commitment to donate at least 1% of our turnover to environmental organisations. Last year, that equated to almost £18,000 in donations.
Donation to the project: £4,000
Since 2024 we have been working with Chain Collaborative, supporting their community led development programs that build relations with local leaders in coffee growing regions. Their work allows communities to combat intergenerational poverty and marginalisation in the coffee sector on their own terms, according to their own vision for change.
Incubator Project
Since 2024, we have been co supporting Tinamit Tolimán (alongside Primavera coffee) in a two-year incubator project run by The Chain Collaborative. They developed a pisciculture project raising tilapia and other fish in constructed tanks to diversify income streams and enhance local food security.
Tinamit Tolimán, an association based in San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala. Coffee production is vital to the local economy, as the crop is the primary income source for 90% of families in the area. From its inception, Tinamit Tolimán has focused on securing a dignified quality of life for its members alongside a commitment to environmental protection in the region.

After our trip to Ethiopia we knew we had to find a way to increase our impact in this region. We’ve been buying coffee from Bette Buna for 2 years now and their commitment to empowering communities and raising local living standards is truly inspiring. They are rooted in this work, committed to building a positive and sustainable future by educating and creating equal opportunity jobs at their own facilities and further afield. Already, they are distributing climate-resistant seedlings (for free) and hosting "learning by doing programs" for children, youth and adults.
After consulting with Hestor and Dawit of Bette Buna, we have committed to funding a new training program within Taferi Kela. This program will educate local community farmers and leaders to become trainers themselves who will then deliver the same training throughout the larger community.
Founded by husband-and-wife team Dawit and Hester, the project was created to honour the legacy of Dawit's grandparents, whose dream was to build a life through coffee. Today, that vision has grown into something far bigger than a coffee business.
Working alongside local chiefs, community leaders and smallholder farmers across Taferi Kela in Sidamo and Guji Megadu, Bette Buna supports producers through every stage of coffee production while investing in the future of the communities around them.

Over half a million are still waiting for support, highlighting the immediate need for action.The Wave Project is committed to tackling this crisis head-on, offering life-changing interventions that help young people build confidence, manage anxiety and improve their wellbeing.
It’s not just about surfing — the charity's programmes provide a safe and supportive space for young people to reconnect with joy, build resilience, and find confidence again.

Plant One is a Cornwall-based Community Interest Company restoring native woodlands across the South West.
Their work goes far beyond planting trees. Every woodland is carefully planned, planted and managed to become a thriving habitat for wildlife, while reconnecting people with nature through hands-on restoration and community projects.
We’re proud to partner with Cornwall Rural Community Charity (CRCC) to do this. An organisation dedicated to supporting and strengthening Cornwall’s Communities to improve quality of life. They work with young adults with learning disabilities to prepare them for the workplace.
We are a training partner for the course and provide a place of work for students who want to trial work having completed their barista training.
