Las Hortensias

Back for another year is this special lot from Douglas Ponce, his honey processed Catuai & Marcelleza is always a welcome treat. It’s dense flavour profile of honey and stewed fruits makes for a truly delicious cup.

We were fortunate to see Las Hortensias in full harvest glory. Douglas Ponce, with his loving smile and passion for the land, was a sight to behold. We stayed on a neighbouring farm so we visited Douglas over several days, both when the farm was quiet and late in the afternoon when workers climb the steep hills to deliver and weigh their bags of cherries.

OUR BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

CARBON IMPACT

Our Roaster:
We’ve recently switched to a new electric Typhoon roaster which allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We selected it for its capacity, efficiency, and to maintain the same high-quality roasting. This transition also marks a step toward our long-term goal of becoming carbon neutral, with a commitment to using 100% renewable electricity.

Our Packaging:
Our 250g bags are paper based and can be recycled with kerbside recycling or composted in your garden. We recommend storing your coffee in an airtight container like this one. Our 1kg bags are 70% wastemade (LDPE4) and recyclable with soft plastic at the supermarket. Please don't put them in your curbside recycling. The planet thanks you!

The high mountains bring ideal coffee growing conditions here, but steep slopes too; the terrain is far from easy. Witnessing the harvest firsthand, it’s easy to be awestruck by the steep slopes and the skill required to navigate them. Pickers carry heavy sacks of cherries up and down these slopes in blazing heat. It's a testament to their hard work that we can enjoy this incredible coffee.

MEET THE PRODUCER

Douglas Ponce

We had a good feeling his coffee would stand out by the healthy-looking cherry and the clean and tidy mill - these things are always a good sign. Lo and behold, there was a gem on the cupping table - a sweet and delicious single variety lot - ‘red catuai’ is well renowned in the region and is known for its exceptional cup character. This one is juicy, with hints of raisin followed by a gorgeous honey sweetness that keeps you wanting more.

Buying Standards

Community Impact

Our impact work in coffee producing regions is directly linked with the communities we purchase coffee from. We want to see those communities prosper in all areas of their life, not just coffee production, and for the benefit of all within the community.

We stayed on a neighbouring farm so we visited Douglas over several days, both when the farm was quiet and late in the afternoon when workers climb the steep hills to deliver and weigh their bags of cherries. It’s a humbling experience and one that puts the cost of coffee into perspective. Make no mistake, this is hard labour, but there is a good atmosphere and feeling of camaraderie when the bags are weighed.
