SEEDLING NURSERY PROJECT

We are proud to be partnering with Omwani Coffee Company and Agri Evolve to support a seedling nursery through the purchase of this coffee. This sweet and chocolatey brew from Uganda is everything we look for in a Trust coffee; delicious, sustainable and supports producers directly.

THE TASTE OF POSITIVE CHANGE

Carefully crafted and undeniably delicious, the Trust range showcases the best of specialty coffee with an impact.

All the coffees we buy adhere to the Yallah Buying Standards. Trust coffees will, by default, meet this criteria, but they will also come with something extra. Whether it’s shipped over by sailboat with almost zero carbon emissions, grown using agroforestry methods, or supporting social projects in that region. Trust coffees come with a direct impact, and story to tell.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

Arabica varietals are farmed in the higher altitude regions of the country, such as Mount Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains.

Midnight Flyer is so named for the race undertaken to get the cherries to the washing station after being hand-picked from the trees. During the harvest, the washing stations in this region are often a hive of activity at night. The cherries are picked by day; it’s crucial they get processed as quick as possible in the cool night air before they get spoiled by the blazing sun the following day. It’s a long day of work, but so worth it for the amazingly consistent quality of the coffees from here.

Social Relationships

Community Outreach

We aim to support as many community-driven projects via the purchase of coffee as we possibly can. The high altitude and lack of infrastructure, in the Rwenzori mountains makes it challenging for coffee farmers in the region to access high-quality quality seedlings. The yield produced by mature coffee trees declines year on year, and without access to new seedlings, this can have an impact on farmers' income.

Each kilo we purchased of Midnight Flyer has provided 3.5 coffee seedlings for a nursery in the Rwenzori mountains, in partnership with Omwani Coffee Company and Agri Evolve. Funding this project will allow Agri Evolve to gather the tools and services they need in order to construct nursery beds, supply it with tools, hire nursery operators, and begin raising coffee seedlings.
