Bethania Javanica NICARAGUA

£13.60
  • Tasting Notes: Cherry Liquor, Dark Chocolate

This vibrant but complex coffee is from the Albir sisters own farm, Finca Bethania. This lot is one of our favourites from this year’s harvest; expect boozy cherry liquor, rich and indulgent dark chocolate, all balanced by a strawberry-like acidity. We are delighted to see this exceptional coffee return for another year.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

CARBON IMPACT

Our Roaster:
We’ve recently switched to a new electric Typhoon roaster which allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We selected it for its capacity, efficiency, and to maintain the same high-quality roasting. This transition also marks a step toward our long-term goal of becoming carbon neutral, with a commitment to using 100% renewable electricity.

Our Packaging:
Our 250g bags are paper based and can be recycled with kerbside recycling or composted in your garden. We recommend storing your coffee in an airtight container like this one. Our 1kg bags are 70% wastemade (LDPE4) and recyclable with soft plastic at the supermarket. Please don't put them in your curbside recycling. The planet thanks you!

Community Impact

Our impact work in coffee producing regions is directly linked with the communities we purchase coffee from. We want to see those communities prosper in all areas of their life, not just coffee production, and for the benefit of all within the community.

Ana & Martha Lucía Albir

Ana and Martha, following in their parent’s footsteps, grow a few select varieties of coffee on their farm, including this incredible Javanica. We’re now into our eighth season of working with Ana and Martha and it’s a joy to see their coffees return each year, tasting as good as ever.

This variety has had quite a journey around the globe; originating in Ethiopia, the variety was brought to Java in Indonesia, where it earned its namesake. It was then cultivated in Cameroon where it was shown to be resistant to coffee berry disease - a huge challenge for producers in Africa at the time. Since then, it has made its way to central America and grows exceptionally well at high altitudes, and is often compared to the prized Gesha variety.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Segovia, Nicaragua

Nicaraguan season for us is always an exciting one, as we see the return of coffees from Martha and the team at Cafetos de Segovia, with whom we have a longstanding relationship. Our buying practices in Nicaragua have allowed producers to receive higher prices for their coffees and encouraged experimentation of different processes, exciting developments for everyone in the supply chain.
