Izuba Mugoyi Burundi

£13.50

For such a small country Burundi produces some of the most consistently delicious coffees of the year, with a distinct fruit-driven profile and a pointed, moreish acidity. This washed lot comes for the Mugoyi hill, or colline, which is one of three collines surrounding the Izuba washing station.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

ROASTING ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

We’ve recently switched to a new electric Typhoon roaster which allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We selected it for its capacity, efficiency, and to maintain the same high-quality roasting. This transition also marks a step toward our long-term goal of becoming carbon neutral, with a commitment to using 100% renewable electricity. Though the installation required a significant investment in new power infrastructure, the move reinforces our dedication to sustainability and strengthens our promise to customers that we deliver on our environmental commitments.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Izuba, Burundi

One of our favourite origins here in the roastery. Producers in Burundi, much like other African coffee growing countries, bring their freshly picked coffee to local mills for processing, keeping the quality consistent. A clean, aromatic coffee usually punctuated with rich berry notes.

Smallholder Producers of Izuba

Don’t let the somewhat simple flavour descriptors of this lot fool you, this coffee is jam packed with dark berry-like fruits, which come alive as the coffee cools. The green apple acidity is just enough to brighten the cup, creating a well balanced and moreish profile that leaves you wanting more and more.

Coffees from the Izuba washing station consistently receive higher scores and therefore fetch a higher price, with producers from this station being paid 25% more than neighbouring stations and 33% more than the national average. This is thanks to the hard work of Matraco Coffee, Raw Materials partner in Burundi, driving better processing protocols and attention to detail, all resulting in better tasting coffees and more value to producers.

Social Relationships

Community Led

We aim to support as many community-driven projects via the purchase of coffee as we possibly can, as well as initiating our own community projects in the countries we work with.
