Tinamit Toliman Guatemala

£16.00

It was during our trip to Guatemala in 2024 that we fortuitously met the Tinamit co-op at the Primavera dry mill, we fell in love with the producers of the group and their excellent coffees. This year we are pleased to see the return of their natural lot, which is bursting with sweet-fruit forward flavours - which reminds us of a bag of Skittles!

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

ROASTING ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

We’ve recently switched to a new electric Typhoon roaster which allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We selected it for its capacity, efficiency, and to maintain the same high-quality roasting. This transition also marks a step toward our long-term goal of becoming carbon neutral, with a commitment to using 100% renewable electricity. Though the installation required a significant investment in new power infrastructure, the move reinforces our dedication to sustainability and strengthens our promise to customers that we deliver on our environmental commitments.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Guatemala

Guatemala is renowned for its exceptional coffee quality. Coffee production and export has always been an important part of Guatemalan economy and culture, with the country being the eighth largest exporter of coffee in the world. Coffees from Guatemala tend to be appreciated for their sweetness and balance in the cup due to its high altitude and volcanic soils.

Tinamit Co-op

During our trip to Guatemala back in February, we were honoured to be at the mill when members of this co-operative in Lake Atitlan delivered their coffee there for the first time. The co-op is made up of producers from an indigenous Mayan community where they also run their own roastery and coffee shop for the locals.

Our approach to sourcing coffee is rooted in building relationships and working on long term time scales. In reality this means supporting the producers we buy from in good and bad years & buying multiple lots from each year's harvest, showcasing both the natural and washed lots from the Tinamit co-op brings us immense joy.

Income Diversification

Chain Collaborative

As part of our commitment to 1% For The Planet, whereby we donate % of overall revenue to charities and organisations carrying out work in sustainability. Each year we divide the total and donate 50% to charities close to home and the other 50% to coffee sourcing regions, which in 2024 was the Tinamit Toliman co-operative, with the help of The Chain Collaborative. The co-operative were given the freedom to decide how they’d like to spend their money, on a project of their choosing that would bring the most benefit to the community. It was decided that they would build a fish farm, run by the co-operative, so they could farm fish for members of the co-operative and also sell fish to nearby communities.

This not only helps alleviate the group's food security issues but also creates a secondary renewable revenue stream, reducing their reliance on coffee. We can’t wait to visit the group in 2026 to see their progress and taste the fish!
