A true collaboration of like-minded folk putting people & community first. This coffee has travelled on 3 ships, before arriving just a few miles from our roastery. Combining new technology with marine heritage, passion, love and genuine belief that this movement is here to stay.

We’re beyond exited to release this wonderful coffee. You can expect a very sweet cup with deep notes of chocolate, toffee and brown sugar.

Decarbonising Coffee

We believe wholeheartedly in the merits of shipping coffee by sail, which extend beyond the obvious environmental benefits. From Guatemala to France, France to UK, this transit has been powered almost entirely by wind. In fact, every single part of this product has been considered to reduce carbon emissions.

We believe it’s the best in class for carbon reduction.

Impact of Sailship

Organic Coffee
This coffee is organically grown. We know organically grown coffee produces significantly less CO2e - approx 0.3kg CO2e compared verses 1.4kg CO2e using traditional methods.

Low Carbon Transit
Shipping by sail produces approximately 13g CO2e per KG verses 80g CO2e of traditional cargo shipping.

Renewable Power
Coffee collected from the port in our electric vans, charged via self-produced solar energy.Roasted using our 20kg electric roaster, which is powered by 100% renewable energy.

Wider Impact

Of course, this low-carbon transport method produces less C02, but this movement is about so much more than that. We see sail ship as a beacon for change and a marker for transparency and ethos, taking responsibility for the actions of our business and the impacts we may cause at every point in the supply chain.

going the distance

The Journey

To give some context, this coffee (or most of it at least) has been on 3 boats to get here. From Guatemala to France, France to Plymouth and finally Plymouth to Port Navas.

The final leg of this journey was an incredible sail that Rich was lucky enough to be on. In many ways this collaboration of like-minded people & businesses is at the heart of sail cargo.

the cost of shipping by sail

Transparent Pricing

This year, we’re breaking down the costs within the sales price for better transparency. We wanted to show the difference between container shipping vs sail and how this affects the final cost. It’s also an opportunity to be honest and open with other costs and considerations, like our margins & what producers are paid. Shout out to Skylark for getting that ball rolling.

Sailship Partners

By choosing sail, we are making a conscious decision to spend money with companies that take direct climate action.

This journey has been made possible through a community of people who are dedicating their lives to more sustainable and fairer business, bringing together farmers, ships & buyers, whilst putting people and planet first.

  • Belco - We have sourced this coffee through Belco, a french importer who have changed the game when it comes to sail ship transportation.

  • Comptoir d'Éole - Sylvain charters the modern cargo sail boat ‘Grain De Sail’ to run a regular crossing from Porugal > France > UK.

  • Sail Trade South West - the final leg of the journey (Plymouth to Port Navas) has been made possible by Dominic and Barbera Bridgman.
