Pedro Garcia Peru

£15.00

Pedro manages his small 2 hectare farm alongside his family, while he mainly works and lives in the city, but returns to oversee the main harvest and processing. From the 2 hectares of Bourbon and Pache trees Pedro is able to yield around 30 exportable bags of coffee, hence needing to work in the city and supplement his income from coffee production.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

ROASTING ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

We’ve recently switched to a new electric Typhoon roaster which allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We selected it for its capacity, efficiency, and to maintain the same high-quality roasting. This transition also marks a step toward our long-term goal of becoming carbon neutral, with a commitment to using 100% renewable electricity. Though the installation required a significant investment in new power infrastructure, the move reinforces our dedication to sustainability and strengthens our promise to customers that we deliver on our environmental commitments.

Pedro Garcia

Quite often small producers like Pedro operating in remote regions will be the victims of coyote coffee buyers, these are middlemen who target small producers, turn up to their farms with cash during harvest season and convince them to sell their coffee at reduced prices. These coyotes will then go onto sell the coffee to mills and exporters for a higher price, not only swindling the producer out of income but also losing quality coffee to the blended lots these coyotes sell on. It is an unfortunate situation and is all too common across South and Central America.

However, Falcon Speciality, the exporters and importers of this lot, decided to avoid purchasing coffees from the local mills and buying stations, choosing to build their own purchasing station to work directly with producers. This way Falcon can ensure producers are receiving the fair and correct price for their coffee and uphold complete traceability through the supply chain. We are very thankful for this work and the opportunity to present this delicious lot from Pedro.

Social Relationships

Direct Trade

The supply chain - from farm to cup - can be a long and complicated road. Every person in that chain has to get paid from the sale of the coffee, so reducing the amount of middlemen means we can offer premiums to producers, without having to inflate the price to the consumer. Working directly with farmers is key to forging long term relationships, and we can commit to buying before the harvest has even started.
