El Encanto Colombia

£17.20

There are a number of farms across Colombia that are renowned for their quality and consistency, El Encanto is one of these farms. Now run by Juan Saldarriaga, the son of Luis, who took control in 2012 and has been experimenting with new varieties, working to understand how each variety thrives on their farm. This Tabi and Castillo lot is a beautiful example of all the hard work Juan has put in.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

ROASTING ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

We’ve recently switched to a new electric Typhoon roaster which allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We selected it for its capacity, efficiency, and to maintain the same high-quality roasting. This transition also marks a step toward our long-term goal of becoming carbon neutral, with a commitment to using 100% renewable electricity. Though the installation required a significant investment in new power infrastructure, the move reinforces our dedication to sustainability and strengthens our promise to customers that we deliver on our environmental commitments.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Colombia

Colombia is renowned for pushing the boundaries of coffee production and processing, being home to many of the worlds best and highest paid producers.

It’s well known that Colombia is synonymous with exceptional quality coffee. We aim to showcase the very best of what this country has to offer, as well as working with our partners to shine a light on marginalised producer groups, such as women producers.

Luis & Juan Saldarriaga

Since taking over, Juan has focused on experimenting with new varieties and learning how each one flourishes in their unique environment. This Tabi and Castillo lot is a shining example of the dedication and hard work he has invested. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly simple tasting notes—this coffee is complex, layered with sweet red fruit notes and a delicate herbaceousness that we’re all loving in the roastery

Environmental Impacts

Innovative Growing Methods

El Encanto is Luis’ favourite farm of the two owned and run by the family, it is exceptionally well kept and features a variety garden which displays around 60 coffee varieties. One of the primary challenges for Juan and the team is the high temperatures and humidity, which causes difficulties during the drying process. In response to this they have built an impressive 200 square meter shelving system, which can be wheeled outside during dry days and moved inside during wet days. Since this new system the coffees have become much more consistent and the quality has improved drastically.
