Coffee of the month

Los Arcos, Guatemala

Sometimes you get lucky. That's how we met Osmin Garcia, a third generation coffee farmer from the Jalapa region of Guatemala. We didn't plan to visit his farm, we didn't even know it existed to be honest, but one conversation led to another and somehow we found ourselves sat on his patio, talking about Orchids.

Osmin is a joker. He was most interested in betting on the quality of his coffee and his (mind blowing) collection of flowers. They really were incredible and jokes aside kind us gave us the impression he cares about things that are hard to grow. We enjoyed his company from the get-go and stayed for a few hours just listening to stories and enjoying his laughter. When we blind picked his coffee the following day (from over 30 coffees) it was clear we had to buy this lot. It's deliciously drinkable - sweet and acidic in equal measure, combining to give you a silky, cocoa-laced coffee you want to drink again and again.

OUR BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

Shade grown on fertile volcanic slopes, it’s safe to say Guatemalan coffee is a real crowd pleaser when it comes to quality. Guatemala has a rich history of growing crops throughout Mayan culture, which is still present in many coffee growing communities today.

MEET THE PRODUCERS

Osmin Garcia

A staggering 98% of coffee in Guatemala is grown under shade. Osmin uses a mixture of inga and gravilea trees, that work in harmony to improve the coffee harvest. Gravilea, otherwise known as silky oak, is native to Australia and is the most common choice of shade tree for Guatemalan producers. It has soft, fern-like leaves that provide dappled sunlight to the coffee trees, allowing the beans to ripen slowly and keeping the soil moist.

Buying Standard

The distribution of shade trees aids in recreating a conducive microclimate for the coffee plants, reducing the stress caused by excessive sunlight.
By focusing on these sustainable agricultural practices, Migoti is advocating for a more consistent, robust coffee harvest. This proactive approach not only ensures a steadier yield but also contributes to the overall longevity of coffee farming in the region.
