Izuba, Burundi

For such a small country, Burundi produces some of the most consistently delicious coffees of the year, with a distinct fruit-driven profile and a pointed, moreish acidity. This washed lot, for our subscribers, showcases the quintessential Burundian profile perfectly - we hope you enjoy.

OUR BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags are 100% plastic-free and can be recycled with your household paper or composted in your garden. We recommend storing your coffee in an airtight container like this one. Our 1kg bags are home compostable but not domestically recyclable, please don't put them in your curbside recycling. The planet thanks you!

Izuba, Kayanza Province, Burundi

Variety

Red Bourbon

Washed

Country of origin

Izuba, Burundi

One of our favourite origins here in the roastery. Producers in Burundi, much like other African coffee growing countries, bring their freshly picked coffee to local mills for processing, keeping the quality consistent. A clean, aromatic coffee usually punctuated with rich berry notes.

MEET THE PRODUCER

Smallholder Producers of Izuba

The station employs two full-time managers and around 250 seasonal workers during harvest, providing premiums not only to farmers, but also all the station staff. Izuba meaning “sun” in Kirundi, is located in Runinya, Kabarore Commune, of Kayanza Province. The washing station is located close to a nearby river, providing a vital and regular freshwater source for coffee processing, and is near the Kibira National Park, where the soil and climate create an environment that's fantastic for coffee production.

Buying Standards

Economic transparency

We are committed to full economic transparency within our supply chain, ensuring every producer gets paid fairly for their harvests. We pay way above the market price for each coffee we buy and this is crucial in making sure that coffee remains a financially viable crop for producers for years to come.

In a similar manner to the way Raw Material works in Rwanda, they rely on the support of local partners in Burundi. These companies are ethically aligned, with the immediate goal of distributing profits more equitably to producers, and paying station staff well above the government set market rate.

Last year, almost none of the households around Izuba washing station had health insurance. In Burundi this season, Raw Material have focussed on ensuring all families delivering cherries to them receive full health insurance. This initiative was revealed as the most effective impact they could have from a long list of possible activities following interviews with the community.
