There are a select few names of washing stations and co-ops in Kenya that elicit excitement and anticipation of incredible coffees, Karimikui is one of those. Kenyan season is always hotly anticipated by coffee buyers and roasters, their profiles of big juicy purple fruits and sparkling acidity is very welcome in the back end of summer. For our first Kenyan of this season we’re releasing this sweet, very drinkable washed lot from Karimikui, with a big hit of ripe blackberry and a lingering lemon-like acidity.

Kenya has and still is experiencing its fair share of turbulence, politically and otherwise, yet throughout this coffee quality remains consistent and hopeful.

Smallholders of the Rungeto Farmers Co-op Society

Established in 1953 the Rungeto Farmers Co-op Society now includes approximately 3500 smallholder farmers, all of whom are allocated a hectare of land for cultivating coffee and crops. Due to the nature of coffee producers in Kenya owning and working on such small parcels of land it is vital they are able to grow food crops to support their family.

Kenya is blessed with near perfect conditions for coffee production with rich volcanic soils at altitudes of 1600+ metres above sea level with plenty of rainfall, ensuring healthy coffee plants and consistently good yields. Members of the Co-op will pick ripe cherries and deliver daily to the Karimikui washing station where they will receive higher premiums for delivering ripe cherries only. The team at the washing station then float, sort, depulp the cherries and ferment for 24-72 hours before drying on African raised beds. Both producers and washing station workers are proud of their meticulous cultivation and processing efforts which harness the neutral resources on offer to produce consistently exceptional coffee.
