GISHEKE RWANDA

£15.00

There are moments on sourcing trips which are simply unforgettable, they leave us with a sense of pure wonderment and joy. We arrived at the shores of the Gisheke washing station on our wooden boat after experiencing the heaviest rains ever, bailing out the boat with half a plastic bottle. The members of the washing station were greeting us as we approached, welcoming and thanking us for visiting them; we still get goosebumps thinking of it.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Nyamasheke, Rwanda

A country we buy from annually; coffee from these luscious, jungle covered mountains has a unique tea-like quality. Producers in Rwanda have persevered through political turbulence at the turn of the century, and are now one of the most sought after origins in specialty coffee.

When we arrived at the mill a man with an electric keyboard started playing and the place erupted into singing and dancing; there ensued half an hour of what was essentially a party. It was an experience we will never forget and every time we cup coffees from Gisheke we are reminded of the incredible people we met and danced with.

Paradise does not even come close to describing Gisheke, nestled on the hillside overlooking the expanse of Lake Kivu; it is lush and breathtaking. A constant gentle breeze moves over Lake Kivu, up the sides of the valley and through the coffee on the raised drying beds, this ensures a slow and even drying process. Coffees from these stations are some of the best in Rwanda, owing their clean profiles and longevity to this slow gentle drying process.
