SAN LUCAS MEXICO

£15.00

Mexico is a coffee producing country that constantly surprises us, the conditions in which coffee is grown and the extreme poverty rates in the region should not be a recipe for good coffee. Yet every year we are blown away by the quality and variety of what is being produced, making us hopeful for the years to come.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Oaxaca, Mexico

A coffee producing country with so much potential, Mexico produces some of our favourite coffees every year in tough and unpredictable conditions. We are committed to sourcing coffees from progressive exporters, who value producers and work to improve conditions and productions for the long term.

Though coffee from Mexico is always of excellent quality many challenges exist for producers to make it a viable source of income, with yields only a fraction of what they are in other countries and internal struggles such as localised crime, inaccessibility and a lack of agricultural education. Ensambles work closely with producers and associations to improve quality and yields, eventually leading to increased income and a more sustainable livelihood in coffee production.

Producers of Sierra de Flores Magon

This particular lot from importers Ensambles comes from San Lucas Zoquiápam, the highest part of the Sierra de Flores Magon in Oaxaca. The higher altitude and colder temperatures means coffee takes longer to mature, resulting in later harvesting and usually better tasting coffee.

Environmental Efforts

Agroforestry

Agroforestry is a way of growing coffee alongside other trees and plants, either by planting coffee in established forests or purposefully planting other cash crops to grow alongside. This can be a great tool to combat climate change in coffee growing countries, as well as maximising profits for producers.

In this region of Mexico, producers use a traditional polyculture system for coffee growing, where fruits, corn and timber trees are planted alongside coffee, increasing diversity and resilience to climatic and pest issues.
