Our second Kenyan release of the year comes from the Kangocho washing station, which belongs to the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society in Nyeri. A total of 1100 producers sell cherries to the Kangocho washing station, whose 781 member growers own the washing station together. Wildlife in this region is highly abundant and producers are educated in the importance of protecting habitats and biodiversity, both of which are known to provide ecosystem services and benefit local communities. Kangocho has also partnered with a local healthcare provider to increase access to medication and health related education for members, something that is otherwise very difficult to access.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags and 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

Due to the cooperative ownership structure at Kangocho it is naturally a very democratically run organisation, where everyone shares in the decision making and benefits from improvements in quality. Producers are financially incentivised to pick and deliver only the ripest cherries with bonuses, because delivery under or overripe cherries would bring the overall quality of the lots down and inturn reduce prices for everyone. But a well managed factory who prioritises its members welfare will naturally encourage producers to deliver ripe cherries, which Kangocho clearly does.
