This is the first coffee we’ve bought from Ethiopia that can be traced down to the individual farmer and coffee varietal. With the changes to export laws in Ethiopia, small producers are now able to market their coffee directly, but this is still very challenging, and few have access to capital to make this happen. Exciting times and big steps forward, long may it continue. 

Provenance and traceability have always been a cornerstone of our sourcing policy, but for many years the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange ECX has meant that the same rules don’t apply to Ethiopian coffee. Traceability to farm level simply wasn’t possible.

Basha and his wife own 3 hectares of coffee in Bombe village in Bensa, Sidama. The coffee grows under the shade of native trees in a forest and is solely the 74160 variety, which he chooses to cultivate because of its pronounced citrus and floral flavour.
