CRISPIN MATIAS GUATEMALA

£14.30

We had the pleasure of meeting Crispin Matias on the first day of our trip to Guatemala this year, a passionate and hard working producer who lives with his wife Margarita and six children on their farm - La Esmeralda. Crispin named his farm as such because of how green and lush it is, sitting on the side of the mountain near the town of San Antonio Huista - and we can happily attest that the name fits perfectly.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

OUR PACKAGING

Our 250g bags are 100% plastic-free and can be recycled with your household paper or composted in your garden. We recommend storing your coffee in an airtight container like this one.

Our 1kg bags are LDPE 4 packaging, a type of soft plastic, very common in food packaging. For home consumers LDPE 4 is still not curbside recyclable, but is accepted at local recycling points and dedicated soft plastics deposit points. Find a location near you.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

Huehuetenango, Guatemala

Guatemala is renowned for its exceptional coffee quality. Coffee production and export has always been an important part of Guatemalan economy and culture, with the country being the eighth largest exporter of coffee in the world. Coffees from Guatemala tend to be appreciated for their sweetness and balance in the cup due to its high altitude and volcanic soils.

meet the producer

Crispin Matias

Crispin's story of how he came to find himself owning a farm and producing coffee is not too dissimilar to how we in coffee consuming countries end up working in cafes and roasterys. Though Crispin grew up among coffee farms and has a deep love of agriculture, he first found himself owning and running his own grocery shop, until a certain moment where he realised his heart was in growing crops. After selling his shop he bought a small parcel of land and started his new life in coffee production and after many years he is incredibly proud of the work he’s put in and the coffee being produced.

This story of finding a career in coffee after years of working in another industry is so common, especially in consuming countries. For us at Yallah it’s not just that we get to taste amazing coffees everyday, though this is a big part of it, but it is the opportunity to work with such incredible people all over the world everyday - cafes and producers alike.

Environmental Efforts

Agroforestry

Agroforestry is a way of growing coffee alongside other trees and plants, either by planting coffee in established forests or purposefully planting other cash crops to grow alongside. This can be a great tool to combat climate change in coffee growing countries, as well as maximising profits for producers.
