EL SALITRE COSTA RICA

£15.80

Welcome back El Salitre! Our favourite hidden gem from Costa Rica is finally here. The Alvarado family have once again given us a wonderfully complex coffee; fruity and syrupy flavours of pomegranate grenadine with a delicious floral note of rooibos tea. It’s easy to see why we are roasting this coffee for the third year in row.

BUYING STANDARDS

It’s really important for us to work with trusted partners in our supply chain who can provide us with honesty and traceability. We have created a set of guidelines to help us source coffee in a way we feel aligns with our values and beliefs. There are three core categories that we think outline the most important factors to consider when purchasing coffee: economic transparency, social relationship, and environmental efforts.

A real showstopper origin, known for its high quality coffees and experimental fermentation processes. We have been buying small lots from the same farms year on year, and we are always impressed by the innovation in processing techniques. Expect wild, fruit heavy flavours.

The Alvarado Family

El Salitre is a family-run farm, owned by John Alvarado and Katthya Fonsesca. All four of their now grown-up children have shown a keen interest in being part of the family business, with Johhny and Marilyn taking the reins and overseeing the farm and the mill - Corazon de Jesus - themselves.

They are part of the Bandera Azul program, which means they focus on sustainable buying practices such as water management and conservation of the land. The Brunca region has historically not been well-regarded for coffee growing, but this perception is changing thanks to producers like the Alvarado family who have shown that with a keen passion and knowledge of the land, coffee like this one can be mind-blowingly tasty.

Social Relationships

Family Run Farm

The average age of a coffee producer globally is over 60 years old. There is little incentive for young people to learn the trade, as the returns are usually low in comparison to what they could earn in urban areas. By keeping the business in the family, the interest and passion for growing coffee is kept alive and can even thrive from the influence of younger farmers who are keeping up to date with innovation in technology and growing practices.
