KOILEKI VILLAGE TIMOR LESTE

£15.00

Ermera is Timor-Leste’s main coffee growing region thanks to its high altitudes and lush, jungle covered slopes. Coffee from this part of the world has a unique flavour profile; a rich earthiness like dark chocolate, punctuated with warming spices such as black pepper and cola, all sweetened with juicy strawberries and cherries.

Work is currently focused namely in the municipality of Ermera, home to the largest coffee production volumes and the countries most important crop.

Timor-Leste is the birthplace of one of the most historically important varieties of coffee. Around 100 years ago, by chance, an arabica plant crossed with a robusta plant to produce the 'Timor Hybrid.' The earthy flavour and disease resistance from the robusta gene crossed with the sweet, floral and pleasantly acidic arabica gene to create a mixture of both.

The Supplier

Raw Materials

The importance of coffee to thousands of smallholder families cannot be overstated, with coffee being the second-highest earner for Timor-Leste after oil. However, the productivity of coffee as a crop is extremely low and the profitability of the crop for a producer is both low and volatile. This is because almost all coffee is sold in the commodity market for a discounted price.
Raw Material aims to help improve the total value and profitability of Timor-Leste’s coffee sector. Achieving this means raising coffee quality, increasing productivity, and building demand in markets that offer higher, stable prices.
